Stoney Valley Capers & Caperberries is a Boutique business in the Award Winning Adelaide Hills. Our Passion for Capers moved us from Interstate to the Adelaide Hills a number of years ago. We are a small family run business which takes pride in producing a specialty food that is grown on our property, hand picked by us, and delivered as a quality product. Our Products are Pesticide Free.
We have been growing Caper (Capparis Spinosa) plants in the Adelaide hills since 2008. Caper plants love the 40 degree days we get in the hills as they are Mediterranean plants that thrive in rocky, dry, heat. We currently have over 100 plants in the ground and we have so many more to plant. Stoney Valley Capers and Caperberries are hand-picked every day in the summer months; this is done regularly to ensure none are missed.
Upon moving to the Adelaide Hills 6 years ago, we started our farm with sheep and cows. Knowing very little about the Caper plants; so with limited experience of planting we have been learning as we go. We’ve experienced some highs and definitely some lows, but now our plants are well established and thriving.
The capers are the flower bud and the caperberries are the seed pods of the plant. Much like any other plant, to get a berry result, the flower needs to be pollinated. As we don’t have beehives nearby we rely on the natural cycle of the land to bring the bees in. Not only are Capers tasty but they are good for you containing a powerful antioxidant called Quercetin. We only salt our capers. Caperberries are in white wine vinegar and fresh herbs straight from our pesticide free garden.
Capers are traditionally known to go with cold smoked salmon and cured salmon but they are not limited to seafood. Try them in your salads, pasta sauces, in your breakfast omelet and over beef, lamb and chicken.
You can wash, rub the salt off or leave the salt on to enhance that caper flavour. Caperberries are perfect on your Antipasto platter or in a bowl with a nice cold beer/ wine as a nibble. Also, for you Martini drinkers, try replacing the olive with Capers or Caperberries.
As we are small business growers and our stock is limited and sell extremely fast. Orders are always welcome and recommended if you have an upcoming event that you would like several jars of product for. Our Capers come in 40g jars and a bulk pack can be arranged. Caperberries are in 250g jars and again can be bulk packed. Our products can be found at markets and on counter of some seafood/butcher stores. Check stockists for more info. Lex and I have started processing the caper plant leaves, this is still a work in progress and we will keep you posted via our Facebook page when these are ready to be sampled and purchased.
